Lorsqu\u2019une pale touche le sol, un obstacle, de l\u2019eau, de l\u2019herbe haute ou qu\u2019elle subit un arr\u00eat ou un ralentissement brutal, l\u2019effort peut se transmettre instantan\u00e9ment au moteur. Le probl\u00e8me est que les dommages les plus importants ne sont pas toujours visibles de l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une h\u00e9lice qui semble encore droite, un moteur qui tourne \u00e0 la main ou m\u00eame un moteur qui red\u00e9marre normalement ne permettent donc pas, \u00e0 eux seuls, de conclure que le moteur est intact. Les donn\u00e9es constructeur sont beaucoup plus prudentes : apr\u00e8s certains \u00e9v\u00e9nements de <strong>prop strike<\/strong> ou de <em>sudden stoppage<\/em>, l\u2019inspection doit aller bien au-del\u00e0 d\u2019un simple contr\u00f4le visuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Qu\u2019est-ce qu\u2019un prop strike, exactement?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La d\u00e9finition est plus large qu\u2019un coup d\u2019h\u00e9lice spectaculaire. Dans son <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lycoming.com\/publications\/service-bulletin-no-533-d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Service Bulletin 533D<\/a>, r\u00e9vis\u00e9 le 10 f\u00e9vrier 2026, Lycoming inclut notamment tout incident o\u00f9 une r\u00e9paration de l\u2019h\u00e9lice devient n\u00e9cessaire, un impact sur un objet solide pendant que le moteur tourne, ainsi qu\u2019une chute soudaine de RPM caus\u00e9e par l\u2019eau, l\u2019herbe haute ou un milieu similaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le constructeur pr\u00e9cise \u00e9galement qu\u2019un \u00e9v\u00e9nement peut \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un <strong>prop strike<\/strong> m\u00eame \u00e0 faible vitesse, par exemple lors d\u2019un contact de bout de pale au taxi ou d\u2019un touch-and-go. Un effondrement de train alors que l\u2019avion est immobile, ou m\u00eame un objet qui frappe une pale, peut aussi imposer des charges lat\u00e9rales importantes au flange du crankshaft, au roulement avant et au seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ce qui se passe r\u00e9ellement \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur du moteur<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le crankshaft et l\u2019h\u00e9lice forment un syst\u00e8me m\u00e9canique directement li\u00e9. Quand l\u2019h\u00e9lice est ralentie brutalement, l\u2019\u00e9nergie de rotation ne dispara\u00eet pas : elle produit un choc m\u00e9canique qui peut charger le crankshaft en torsion et en flexion, tout en transmettant des efforts au train d\u2019engrenages et aux composants qui tournent avec lui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La FAA rappelle dans l\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/documentLibrary\/media\/Advisory_Circular\/AC_20-103.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advisory Circular AC 20-103<\/a> que les crankshafts sont particuli\u00e8rement sensibles aux surcharges et cite explicitement le <strong>propeller strike avec sudden stoppage<\/strong> parmi les causes possibles de surcharge structurale. Ce point est important : l\u2019absence de fissure visible sur le flange ne permet pas d\u2019exclure une contrainte anormale ailleurs dans le crankshaft ou dans le moteur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Le crankshaft peut \u00eatre charg\u00e9 bien au-del\u00e0 de son fonctionnement normal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le crankshaft est con\u00e7u pour absorber les efforts normaux du moteur et de l\u2019h\u00e9lice. Un impact cr\u00e9e toutefois un \u00e9v\u00e9nement transitoire tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rent. Selon l\u2019angle du contact, la vitesse de rotation, le mat\u00e9riau frapp\u00e9, la rigidit\u00e9 de l\u2019h\u00e9lice et la fa\u00e7on dont le r\u00e9gime chute, les efforts peuvent se concentrer au flange, aux journals, au roulement avant ou dans d\u2019autres zones du crankshaft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019est pourquoi le SB533D de Lycoming ne se limite pas \u00e0 mesurer le <em>run-out<\/em> du flange. La checklist pr\u00e9voit aussi l\u2019examen du crankshaft, de son logement de gear, du dowel, des filets, des journals et du crankshaft gear, avec mesures dimensionnelles et inspections appropri\u00e9es. Si le flange est pli\u00e9, Lycoming interdit de le redresser ou de le rectifier pour le ramener dans les limites : le crankshaft doit \u00eatre remplac\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Le choc peut se transmettre au crankshaft gear et au train d\u2019engrenages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00c0 l\u2019arri\u00e8re du crankshaft, le crankshaft gear transmet le mouvement au train d\u2019engrenages du moteur. Apr\u00e8s un prop strike, Lycoming demande notamment de v\u00e9rifier le crankshaft gear, le logement usin\u00e9 dans le crankshaft, le dowel d\u2019alignement, les filets du bolt de retenue et les signes de wear, galling, corrosion ou fretting. Le <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lycoming.com\/content\/service-bulletin-no-475c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Service Bulletin 475C<\/a> traite pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment de cette zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019est l\u2019une des raisons pour lesquelles un moteur peut sembler fonctionner normalement apr\u00e8s l\u2019incident alors qu\u2019une faiblesse m\u00e9canique existe d\u00e9j\u00e0. Une pi\u00e8ce peut \u00eatre encore en place et transmettre la puissance au sol, sans que cela constitue une preuve de sa fiabilit\u00e9 future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Les connecting rods, counterweights, camshaft et autres pi\u00e8ces internes entrent aussi dans l\u2019inspection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La checklist Lycoming 533D pr\u00e9voit notamment des contr\u00f4les de parall\u00e9lisme et de squareness des connecting rods, ainsi que des inspections par particules magn\u00e9tiques du crankshaft, du camshaft, des connecting rods, du crankshaft gear et de plusieurs pi\u00e8ces internes en acier. Les counterweights et leurs composants font \u00e9galement partie de l\u2019\u00e9valuation sur les moteurs concern\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Le crankcase n\u2019est pas oubli\u00e9 : une inspection visuelle et une inspection par ressuage fluorescent sont pr\u00e9vues, avec une attention particuli\u00e8re \u00e0 la structure du support de roulement avant. L\u2019objectif est de rechercher des d\u00e9fauts qui peuvent \u00eatre invisibles sur un moteur assembl\u00e9 et encore couvert de peinture, d\u2019huile ou de d\u00e9p\u00f4ts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Les accessoires mont\u00e9s sur le moteur peuvent eux aussi \u00eatre affect\u00e9s<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un prop strike ne concerne pas uniquement le bloc moteur. Le SB533D demande d\u2019examiner chaque magneto selon les instructions de son fabricant et de consulter la documentation applicable aux autres accessoires mont\u00e9s sur le moteur, y compris le propeller governor lorsqu\u2019il est install\u00e9. Les mesures \u00e0 prendre d\u00e9pendent donc aussi de la configuration r\u00e9elle de l\u2019a\u00e9ronef et des accessoires install\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pourquoi un simple contr\u00f4le du flange ne suffit pas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mesurer le <em>run-out<\/em> du flange peut faire partie d\u2019une inspection, mais ce n\u2019est qu\u2019une donn\u00e9e parmi plusieurs. Le SB533D de Lycoming indique qu\u2019il n\u2019existe pas de seuil unique et quantifiable permettant de pr\u00e9dire de fa\u00e7on fiable l\u2019\u00e9tendue des dommages internes apr\u00e8s un prop strike. Le constructeur avertit aussi que les dommages initiaux peuvent \u00eatre cach\u00e9s et empirer avec le temps et l\u2019usure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour les moteurs Lycoming vis\u00e9s par cette documentation, la checklist 533D commence par l\u2019\u00e9valuation de l\u2019h\u00e9lice, puis pr\u00e9voit la d\u00e9pose de l\u2019h\u00e9lice, la d\u00e9pose du moteur et son d\u00e9sassemblage afin d\u2019inspecter le crankshaft, le camshaft, les connecting rods, le crankshaft gear et d\u2019autres pi\u00e8ces internes. Lycoming indique un temps de conformit\u00e9 <strong>\u00ab BEFORE FURTHER FLIGHT \u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Un petit impact peut-il vraiment causer des dommages?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oui, et c\u2019est pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment le pi\u00e8ge. L\u2019apparence ext\u00e9rieure de l\u2019h\u00e9lice ne permet pas de calculer directement la charge qui a travers\u00e9 le crankshaft. Un contact relativement bref peut produire un effort \u00e9lev\u00e9, alors qu\u2019un autre \u00e9v\u00e9nement visuellement impressionnant peut distribuer l\u2019\u00e9nergie diff\u00e9remment. C\u2019est pourquoi l\u2019\u00e9valuation doit \u00eatre bas\u00e9e sur les donn\u00e9es du fabricant, le type d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement, le moteur concern\u00e9 et les r\u00e9sultats d\u2019inspection, et non sur une impression visuelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lycoming et Continental : ne pas appliquer une proc\u00e9dure universelle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les principes physiques sont similaires, mais les proc\u00e9dures d\u2019inspection ne doivent jamais \u00eatre g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9es d\u2019un fabricant \u00e0 l\u2019autre. Pour un moteur Lycoming, il faut v\u00e9rifier la r\u00e9vision applicable des Service Bulletins et du manuel du mod\u00e8le. Pour un moteur Continental, il faut utiliser la documentation Continental applicable au mod\u00e8le et \u00e0 la configuration concern\u00e9s. La <a href=\"https:\/\/continental.aero\/service-bulletins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biblioth\u00e8que officielle des Service Bulletins Continental<\/a> permet de v\u00e9rifier les documents courants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Il faut \u00e9galement v\u00e9rifier les Airworthiness Directives applicables. Par exemple, la FAA a publi\u00e9 l\u2019AD 2004-10-14 pour certains moteurs Lycoming direct-drive afin de traiter le syst\u00e8me de retenue du crankshaft gear apr\u00e8s un propeller strike. L\u2019applicabilit\u00e9 exacte d\u00e9pend du mod\u00e8le et doit \u00eatre confirm\u00e9e dans la documentation r\u00e9glementaire courante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ce que fait r\u00e9ellement un atelier apr\u00e8s un prop strike<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une inspection s\u00e9rieuse apr\u00e8s prop strike n\u2019est pas une simple formalit\u00e9. Selon le moteur et les donn\u00e9es applicables, le travail peut comprendre la d\u00e9pose et le teardown, le nettoyage des pi\u00e8ces, des contr\u00f4les dimensionnels, des NDT appropri\u00e9s, l\u2019inspection du crankcase et du crankshaft, l\u2019examen des gears et des composants rotatifs, ainsi que la v\u00e9rification des accessoires concern\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les r\u00e9sultats d\u00e9terminent ensuite quelles pi\u00e8ces sont serviceable, lesquelles doivent \u00eatre remplac\u00e9es et quelle port\u00e9e de r\u00e9paration est n\u00e9cessaire.
